But owing to increased ticket sales, it may climb into second place by the time the drawing occurs. Until the next drawing on Oct. 7, the winner has the option of receiving a lump sum settlement of $643.7 million in cash or more than $500 million. The Powerball jackpot reached the third largest in history on Saturday, and the sixth largest in US history.

After Wednesday’s drawing, the estimated jackpot for Powerball was increased to $1.4 billion on an annuity basis, with a cash value of $868 million, according to lottery officials.
